Igbo-American Veterans Demand Nnamdi Kanu’s Release by Christmas, Call Out South-East Leaders

The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) have issued a strong appeal for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by December 25, 2024. In a letter to the Igbo community, AVID criticized the judiciary for failing to deliver justice in Kanu’s case and urged Igbo leaders to lobby President Bola Tinubu for his freedom through political dialogue.

Signed by AVID’s President, Dr. Sylvester Onyia, and Secretary, Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the letter called on South-East governors and leaders to fulfill their commitments to securing Kanu’s release. It warned that further delays would be viewed as complicity in his detention and accused certain politicians of opposing Kanu’s release to protect their political ambitions, including a governor allegedly eyeing the vice presidency in 2027.

AVID dismissed concerns that Kanu’s freedom would interfere with political goals, pointing out that he has no interest in partisan politics. The group also urged regional security chiefs to stop exploiting Kanu’s detention to justify inflated security budgets and emphasized that his release would promote stability in the South-East.

The letter concluded by calling on civic leaders, traditional rulers, and advocacy groups to pressure the South-East Governors Forum to act swiftly, warning that failure to do so would signal neglect of the region’s welfare and betrayal of Kanu’s ongoing plight.
