Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has called on the National Assembly to prioritize the interests of the people of Rivers State when addressing the state of emergency imposed by President Bola Tinubu.
In an open letter to the leadership of the legislative body on Thursday, Obi urged lawmakers to prevent potential abuse of power and ensure the executive branch adheres to legal boundaries. He reminded the public that President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and 27 state assembly members for an initial six-month period, while appointing Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as sole administrator.
Obi's letter addressed Senate President H.E. Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, emphasizing the importance of legislative oversight to safeguard democracy. He expressed concern that the president’s actions could foster a culture of impunity, urging the National Assembly to check potential executive overreach, maintain a balance of power, and prevent any form of tyranny.
He highlighted the legislature’s crucial role in upholding democratic principles by preventing executive excesses, pointing out that Nigerians and democracy supporters worldwide are watching closely for a response to this situation. Obi concluded by urging the lawmakers to act in the best interest of Rivers State and the nation.
