Federal Government Temporarily Shuts Down Enugu Airport for Emergency Runway Repairs

The Federal Government has announced a temporary shutdown of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.

This was revealed in a statement on Saturday morning by Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

According to Orah, the closure is necessary to carry out urgent repairs on a damaged section of the runway.

“There has been a sudden and serious break in the asphalt at a key part of the runway,” she said. “As a result, emergency repairs are scheduled from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025.”

She emphasized that the decision to close the runway aligns with Nigerian civil aviation regulations.

“In line with aviation safety protocols, FAAN has closed the runway for the duration of the repair work,” she noted, adding that the move is part of broader efforts to ensure passenger safety and improve airport infrastructure.

“To prioritize passenger safety and continue upgrading airport facilities, the runway will be unavailable for both arrivals and departures during this period,” she added.

Orah also urged passengers and airport stakeholders to remain patient and cooperative during the closure.

“FAAN seeks the understanding and support of all travelers and airport users while the repairs are ongoing. Flights originally scheduled for this airport will be redirected to alternative airports. We sincerely apologize for the short notice and any inconvenience caused,” she said.

Meanwhile, Air Peace has announced the suspension of all its flights to the Enugu airport, citing the worsening state of the infrastructure, which it claims poses safety risks.
