Police Refute Reports Linking First Lady’s Convoy to Child’s Death in Akure

The Ondo State Police Command has debunked claims that a vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in the tragic death of a young girl in Akure.

The incident occurred shortly after the First Lady’s visit to the state, where she launched the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distributed professional medical kits to midwives across the South-West.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Olushola Ayanlade described the circulating reports as “false and misleading,” clarifying that a hit-and-run driver in an unregistered white Lexus SUV was responsible for the fatality.

“Eyewitnesses and initial investigations confirm the vehicle involved was not part of the First Lady’s convoy,” Ayanlade stated. He added that a motorcyclist who witnessed the incident pursued the fleeing car, while several other bystanders and the child’s parents corroborated the account.

Contrary to earlier reports claiming the victim was nine years old, the police confirmed—based on her parents' statement—that she was seven.

The Commissioner of Police has since visited the bereaved family and assured them of a thorough investigation. The Command reiterated that the First Lady’s convoy had no involvement in the incident.
