Wike: Why I Didn’t Support Peter Obi in 2023 Elections

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has shed light on his decision not to back Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Wike explained that he did not believe Obi had a realistic pathway to victory, labeling him a “social media candidate” with limited electoral viability.

“He had no chance of winning,” Wike said. “I don’t support candidates who trend only online—I focus on who can actually win.”

The former Rivers State governor emphasized his approach to politics is grounded in practicality and outcome-driven analysis, not sentiment. According to him, the dynamics of Nigerian elections involve multiple factors beyond popularity on social media or perceived competence.

“In politics, being the most qualified doesn’t guarantee success. So many variables come into play in Nigeria’s electoral landscape,” he noted.

Wike also commented on the broader challenges of the 2023 election cycle, citing the naira redesign policy and fuel scarcity as major hurdles. He commended President Bola Tinubu for overcoming those odds and securing victory despite what he described as a politically hostile environment.

“Tinubu navigated very difficult terrain, even within his own party. That shows political mastery and divine favor,” he said.

Wike concluded by stressing the importance of strategy, experience, and resilience in winning elections, rather than relying solely on public appeal or digital hype.
